Amazing walrus vocalizations! 🎵 Walruses are social animals and are known for their unique and loud vocalizations. A male walrus roar can reach levels of up to 120 decibels, making them one of the loudest sounds produced by marine mammals. Learn more interesting, fun facts about walruses at www.pdza.org/10-walrus-facts 🤓 The caps on the walrus tusks are to help protect them as they grow - similar to a night guard for human teeth! 📹: Keeper Kristyn | Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium

Little Miss Walrus is always scoring 10/10 or above! For those of you new to our page, welcome! We’re so glad you’re here to follow along with this special patient’s journey! Here are some quick facts you might be wondering: What happened to this walrus calf? This July, our wildlife response program admitted an orphaned Pacific walrus calf, who was found alone, malnourished, and dehydrated on a beach in Utqiagvik, Alaska. We are the only facility authorized to respond to and rehabilitate strande

❗Walrus Patient Update: Walrus Diet Part 1❗ Currently, our walrus calf patient is eating 1.5 L of specialized milk formula and electrolytes every four hours. We will never be able to match a walrus mother’s nutritious milk exactly, but the formula emulates it as closely as we can. Once she is weaned off the formula, she will be introduced to foods that Pacific walrus would eat in the wild, like clams! Walrus eat a wide variety of soft invertebrates found in the ocean like snails, sea cucumbers,

❗Walrus Calf Update❗ The wildlife response team reports that the calf is "eating well and is sassier than ever." These are great signs, but she's still very much receiving critical care. Our team will be closely monitoring her for several days to make sure she's stable and comfortable. PS: Pacific walruses are known for their unique vocalizations, which can include barks, whistles, grunts, roars and more! Check out this little girl's vocalizations as she prepares to settle down for nap. | Alaska

National Geographic on Instagram: "Video by @acacia.johnson | Happy World Animal Day! A Pacific walrus wallows in the surf on Round Island, Alaska. This remote isle in the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary is an important resting place—known as a haul-out—for male Pacific walruses, which gather by the thousands every summer to feed and recuperate after mating season. The textured nodules on male walruses’ skin, called bosses, become more pronounced as the animals age. Follow me @acacia.johnson
