Our Brush Cutting Crew plans to be back out on the railroad this Saturday trimming our trees and removing any brush that could interfere with our trains or sight lines. Dumping... Some of the more interesting freight/maintenance-of-way railroad cars we have in our collection are our two side dump cars that allow material to be dumped side ways along our railroad. This is our smaller ex-US Navy 50 ton side dump car being tested in our Brightside yard yesterday after some valve work. The car is put through a complete dump cycle where you can see the large two-stage lift cylinders tip to body sideways as the door opens to allow the material to flow out. There are

Happy 4th of July and Throwback Thursday all at once... To a little cooler day 10 years ago with our Quincy Railroad Co. #2 and Clover Valley Lumber Co. #4 leading our 4th of July volunteers special. Love to hear our whistles in the canyon. While this train only ran between Sunol and Niles, our train today ran from Sunol to Happy Valley Bridge then all the way to Niles and back to Sunol! Very cool to be able run all that way on fully completed track! Nice work volunteers and Happy 4th of July! |

Did you ever wonder how some speeders are turned around on a railroad? Many speeders today have built in turntables as seen here in this video of a crew turning their car in our Niles yard earlier this year. Originally, many smaller cars were just turned using handles built into the car and pure human strength. A small group of Niles Canyon Railway volunteers were able to hear a great sound today: the start up and operation of the restored Maybach prime mover in Southern Pacific Railroad Krauss Maffei #9010. The 9010 Team has been making steady process on putting the engine back together and recently added the turbos back on. This was another powered test using Southern Pacific SD-9 #5472 dynamic brakes as a load to check on the engine. This was the startup of the Maybach with 9010 crew member, Bill S.
