Today we are once again joined by BHWP naturalist, Monica Flint. She introduces us to a native plant whose, non-native cousin most of us are more familiar with. The American lotus (Nelumbo lutea) is an aquatic plant that will grow readily in lakes, swamps and other areas subject to flooding. Similarly to the Indian lotus, the large tuberous rhizome of this plant was used as a food source by many Native American groups.
