Do you know what a lahar is? How about the risks involved with a lahar? (Spoiler: A Lahar is an Indonesian word describing a mudflow or debris flow that originates on the slopes of a volcano.) May is volcano awareness month and we want to help you understand these terms when you might hear them. | Washington Emergency Management Division

#Lahars are floods of water, rock, ash and debris that can happen during and after volcanic eruptions. Lahars can be immensely powerful, destroying bridges and buildings, and traveling great distances to bury vast areas in mud. If you live in a valley or on a flood plain near a volcano, you should be aware of the potential for lahars. If you hear a rumbling from upriver or notice the water levels rising, move to high ground immediately. This video is part of the #VolFilm volcano hazards series.

May is #VolcanoAwarenessMonth. This week, we focus on #volcano #hazfacts. Today, it’s all about #lahars. When a volcano erupts, heat can melt snow and ice to generate water that mixes with rock and soil to form a thick slurry—called a lahar—that rushes down narrow valleys at speeds as much as 40 mph. A lahar can "bulk up" as it travels downstream, ripping up and carrying trees and car-sized boulders. When it reaches flatter terrain, the lahar loses speed, spreads, and leaves a layer of muddy deb

One of the most tragic volcanic events of the 20th century occurred in Colombia, in 1985, when an eruption of Nevado del Ruiz produced lahars that swept down river valleys and destroyed communities in its path. Mount Rainier and other volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest’s Cascade Range are similar to Nevado del Ruiz in many respects—massive amounts of snow and ice, a long history of lahars, and narrow valleys leading to populated areas. Could what happened at Nevado del Ruiz happen in the Pacific

One of the most tragic volcanic events of the 20th century occurred in Colombia, in 1985, when an eruption of Nevado del Ruiz produced lahars that swept down river valleys and destroyed communities in its path. With little warning, the volcano began erupting on the afternoon of November 13, 1985. Ash and muddy rain began to fall. Communities were alerted but no formal decision was made to evacuate. Later that evening, a stronger eruption produced pyroclastic flows and surges that mixed with snow

USGS scientists and mathematicians have teamed up to develop state-of-the-art computer simulations for one of Mount Rainier’s greatest hazards – lahars that begin as landslides high on the volcano’s flanks. The new computer simulations use D-Claw, a USGS open-source software package, that allows scientists to input specific characteristics of an event to predict how a flow would move across terrain over time. At Mount Rainier, attention was focused on Sunset Amphitheater and Tahoma Glacier Headw

Patriot Resource Enterprises, LLC on Instagram: "Lahars aren’t just volcanic mudflows — they’re gold movers. When volcanoes erupt, ash, rock, and water rush downslope like wet concrete. If gold-bearing rock is in the system, lahars can rip it loose, grind it down, and redeposit it fast—often far from the original source. That’s why some placer gold shows up where rivers alone don’t explain it. 🔍 Why lahars matter for gold: • They transport heavy minerals quickly • They concentrate gold in burie
