How many species of cycads are there? There are roughly 300 known species of cycads and new species of cycad are still being discovered. Although botanists are discovering new species of cycads, they are becoming extinct; the main threats to the cycads are habitat destruction and the harvesting of the plant. For more information on the cycads we have at our nursery or any other queries, please contact us on: 27 (0)81 0359791 / sales@exclusivecycadssa.co.za #exclusivecycadssa #cycad #cycads #cyca

New research reveals that Cycads, ancient plants that have been around for 250 million years, use a hidden superpower to reproduce: they heat up. Here is the science behind this invisible signal: • The Invisible Glow: Cycads produce a specific infrared signal that is invisible to humans but acts like a beacon for pollinators. • Beetle Vision: The beetles that pollinate these plants have special heat-sensing antennae containing the same genes that allow mosquitoes and snakes to hunt by body heat.

Cycads are well-represented at RBG Victoria (Melbourne). Here we see the supremely large female cones of Lepidozamia peroffskyana, one of only two species in the genus (both of which are native to Australia). From Wikipedia we learn: “Lepidozamia peroffskyana is a palm-like cycad in the family Zamiaceae. It is endemic to eastern Australia, primarily near the coast of New South Wales. The species is named after Count Peroffsky (1794-1857), benefactor of the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden.”
