Climbing for snakes isn’t easy, but Black Rat Snakes are up to the challenge. Using their keeled (ridged) scales, they can slightly scrape against the tree bark, this friction allows certain sections of their body to anchor while other sections push or pull in the direction of travel. This concentrated effort is called concertina locomotion and allows them to defy gravity. A similar method is used by human rock-climbers called “chimneying”.
