Scuff sanding is a prep step that is used to slightly rough up a surface and create “tooth” in the existing finish so paint can mechanically bond. You don’t want to sand to raw wood, bare timber opens the grain (rough finish), drinks paint, bleeds tannins, and increases product use. Most modern primers are designed to key into a dull, intact surface rather than bare timber. As with anything exceptions exist: • When the goal is stain or clear coat • When repairs need levelling • When old finishes

A mid range grit works great for this, i preference 120 grit. You dont need to go all the way to raw timber.
