The First Hundred Years: The Story of Howard University (1962)

Dr. Sarah Garland Boyd Jones earned her medical degree from Howard University in 1893 and became the first Black woman licensed to practice medicine in Virginia in 1894. In 1902, she opened Richmond Hospital for Women and Children at 411 Baker Street in Jackson Ward, providing obstetric and pediatric care to a community routinely denied access to white hospitals.
