We are excited to announce the arrival of two Nene that are now residing in our Wetlands Exhibit. Nene, also known as Hawaiian Geese are native to the Hawaiian Islands and are the world's rarest goose! The Nene faced extinction in the 1960's after invasive species were introduced to their habitat and were classified as Endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 1967. With only 30 individuals recorded in 1960, aviculturists initiated a captive breeding program that allowed for the successful

Wildlife experts are wondering how four endangered geese ended up in Southern California. Nene, also known as Hawaiian Geese, are native to the Hawaiian Islands and are the state’s bird. The geese are being cared for at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach. | Inside Edition

The rarest goose on the planet is Hawaii's State Bird, the Nene. In the late 1700's there was around 25,000 nene across the entire state of Hawaii, but by the mid-1950s there were only about 30 Nene in existence, all of them living on the Big Island. Today, across the state, there are now about 3500, thanks to the contribution of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Rangers. The nēnē is on the road to recovery! After 60 years of collaborative conservation efforts among federal, state, NGOs and local partners, the Hawaiian Goose, or nene, may be one step closer to recovery. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is proposing to downlist the Hawaiian goose from endangered to threatened. This announcement opens a 60-day comment period to allow the public to review and comment on the proposal to reclassify the nēnē from endangered to threatened, and to provide add

The Worlds Rarest Goose 🪿 The Nēnē or Hawaiian Goose is the world’s rarest goose and you can see it for FREE in London! 🇬🇧 The Hawaiian Goose numbers dropped from 25,000 when James Cook arrived to Hawaii in 1778 to just 30 in 1952 - we nearly lost this gorgeous animal! Conservation projects helped revive the Nēnē and now today their numbers are around 4000 and on the upward trend, we love to see it! 😎 Go see them in St James’ Park in London, they’re lovely 🪿 #wildlife #wildlifephotography #

Our Hawaii state bird, the native, endangered, Nene goose, with their sweet pair of goslings, such a special sight to see roadside! A few years ago they were near extinction & today are making a wonderful recovery! One of many reasons we ask people take their time & go slow in Hanalei valley, one of the Nene’s nesting areas. Have you ever seen a baby Nene?? 🌺 #beautiful #kauaicalls | Kauai Calls

A new arrival has joined our flock in the North America aviary! This Hawaiian Goose, or nēnē, is just two days old. Nēnē can nest from August through April, although most nesting activity occurs in late winter and early spring. They are often the first waterfowl to hatch each year in the aviaries at Sylvan Heights Bird Park. Once an endangered species on the brink of extinction, the nēnē was removed from the endangered species list in 2019 after decades of conservation efforts successfully incre

I feared that this Nene goose, an endangered species sitting in the middle of the road, was wounded… but apparently it was just warming itself on the pavement. Unlike Myna birds, Nene have no “road smarts” — don’t expect them to jump out of the way when you come through! I pulled over and herded it to the shoulder 😅 | Volcano Hideaways

Meet our newest arrivals! This season’s first clutch of Hawaiian Geese, or Nene, hatched last Friday in the park’s North America aviary. They have spent their first few days of life exploring — and eating — their new surroundings under the watchful care of their parents. Nene can nest from August through April, although most nesting activity occurs in late winter and early spring. They typically lay 2-5 eggs, and the female Nene will incubate the eggs for an average of 30 days before the gosling
