Welcome to Grafton, IL on the Mississippi! Local folks have two minds about the Mississippi. It's either a great place to paddle and boat and jetski, or it's a river of death that swallows small craft. I tried to keep both in mind, and not let confidence overtake me, as i put in at Hideaway Harbor on the Missouri side, and went 6 miles up stream to Grafton, crossing a state line in my canoe for the first time.
