Here’s how we harvest and cure onions to keep them fresh for months! As soon as the tops flop over, it’s time to pull them – they’ve finished growing. After that, we hang them up to dry for a few weeks. Once the leaves are totally dry, we snip off the tops and roots, then store the bulbs in mesh bags in a cool, dry place for long-lasting freshness. It's onion harvest time! I look for the tops of the onions to start flopping over and for a thick skin to develop on the outside of the onions. Then I know it’s time to pull. I usually dry them in very shallow piles maybe only one or two onions thick on wire racks, with good airflow, and out of direct sun and rain. It’ll take several weeks for them to cure. Once cured, they should last for several months in storage depending on the variety. | Mindful Farmer
