During Spanish rule, hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans, primarily from western and central regions, would be transported across the Atlantic Ocean. At one point, Mexico was home to the largest enslaved African population in the americas. Afro-Mexicans have historically worked in many different industries and would mix with the indigenous and Spanish populations. A subgroup of Afro-Mexicans would be “mascogos” who were descendents of formally enslaved black people from America that fleed
