Sequoyah (also known as George Guess) was a Cherokee polymath born around 1770. His creation of the Cherokee syllabary is one of the few known instances of an individual from a non-literate society single-handedly developing a fully functional writing system. Recently, a group of Sequoyah High School student volunteers came together to clean up and decorate a small cemetery located near the school in Tahlequah. The event is a part of efforts to celebrate 150 years of Sequoyah Schools and offered students a way to honor the past and recognize the long history of Sequoyah Schools.
