The team played at several grounds in their early history, including what is now West Herts Sports Club, [3] before moving to Vicarage Road in 1922.

Watford seems to have derived its name from the Anglo-Saxon word Waet, as in wet or watery. This conforms to the area being a marshland back in the day, and a ford is a place where the water is shallow enough to cross by foot.
