The Sealdah Court in West Bengal on Monday sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment after he was found guilty in the RG Kar rape and murder case

The court found the former Kolkata Police civic volunteer guilty last Saturday. Judge Monday informed Roy he can appeal before HC against the sentencing. Roy maintains he is innocent.

The court also ordered Roy to pay Rs 50,000 as fine and directed West Bengal government to pay Rs 1,700,000 as compensation -- Rs 1,000,000 for death and Rs 700, 000 for rape on duty -- to the victim's family.

The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court awarded life imprisonment to the accused Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case and also fined Rs 50,000 to the accused. During the hearing of the case, the Central Bureau of Investigation sought 'capital punishment' for the accused Sanjay Roy.

Kolkata rape and murder case 1990: Almost two decades ago, Dhananjoy Chatterjee hit the headlines after a court convicted him for the rape and murder of a 14-year-old schoolgirl on March 5, 1990. After 14 years of the heinous crime, Chatterjee was executed in Kolkata on August 14, 2004.

Sealdah court sentenced R G Kar murder case accused Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment. Sanjay Roy was accused of the rape & murder of on-duty junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College & Hospital in August 2024.

In the RG Kar medical college rape case, the verdict is expected to be announced Today , and the hearing is ongoing at the Sialda Court. The CBI lawyer has demanded the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, the accused in the rape case that occurred at RG Kar Medical College.
