President Donald Trump on Monday extended a tariff truce with China for another 90 days, setting the stage for broader negotiations between the world’s two biggest economies.

U.S. levies on Chinese goods like toys, footwear and furniture could rise sharply if a deal is not approved by Tuesday’s deadline.

China and the U.S. eventually reached a truce, which resulted in substantially lower tariff rates, and the two countries have been engaged in negotiations since. U.S. tariffs on China will remain at 30 percent until November, when the new 90-day deadline expires, Trump said in an executive order.
