Minnesota state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were killed in a shooting at their home on Saturday morning.

As left-wing protesters took to the streets Saturday for the "No Kings" protests, some of the events were overshadowed by threats of violence. The "No Kings" demonstrations were launched to criticize President Donald Trump and his administration on the same day as his birthday and a parade in Washington,

Across the country, relatively few disruptions were reported during protests and marches where the mood ranged from joyful to defiant.

"It's simple, I don't want a king running my country," said 93-year-old Sister Rosemarie Milazzo, of the Maryknoll Sisters in Ossining.

Also in North Dakota – it’s estimated that 1,700 people turned up in Bismarck, while smaller protests were held in Grand Forks, Jamestown, Bottineau, Devils Lake, Dickinson, Williston and Minot.

The "No Kings" protest was officially canceled, but many Minnesotans continue to gather at the state capitol following the news of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark's, death.
