The Portland Police Bureau won’t help federal immigration enforcement efforts in the city, Chief Bob Day said in a statement Tuesday that reiterated existing policy against cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

President Donald Trump has made immigration enforcement a top priority for his administration and has supported Abbott’s immigration efforts. Texas repeatedly sued the Biden administration, targeting many of its immigration policies, some of which provided migrants legal pathways to legally enter and stay in the U.S.

Border czar Tom Homan told NBC News that several people with criminal convictions were apprehended in Chicago.

President Trump began his immigration crackdown with a flurry of executive orders. Immigration experts say they lay out how he hopes to transform enforcement at the southern U.S. border and beyond.

In more than 21 actions, Trump has moved to overhaul parts of the US immigration system, including how migrants are processed and deported from the US. The White House has since publicised some of these efforts.

The Trump administration launched an immigration enforcement blitz nationwide Sunday that included multiple federal agencies and resulted in the arrest of nearly 1,000 people, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
