Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Sunday threatened to remove from office Democrat lawmakers who don’t show up when the House convenes Monday afternoon. House Democrats Sunday left the state for Illinois in order to prevent the GOP-controlled Legislature from passing a controversial bill that would redraw the state’s congressional boundaries.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Texas House Democrats have until 3 p.m. local time on Monday to return to the statehouse for the special session or risk losing their jobs.

The governor also alleged absconding Democrats may have committed felonies by fundraising to cover the $500-a-day fines they will face under House rules.
