North Florida residents from Pensacola to Jacksonville are bracing for what is expected to be a historic, once-in-a-lifetime winter storm.

The snow is likely to fall on Sunday from the Appalachians to New England. New York City may see its largest snowfall in years.

A “highly impactful” winter storm is also in the forecast, meteorologists said Saturday, with its highest potential south of Interstate 20. The National Weather Service warned South Carolinians of frozen pipes and dangerous conditions for those without shelter. Officials also warned drivers to use caution.

Snow and ice had ground road travel at a halt in some places, and at least two people died in Texas. Many school districts had closed throughout a region unaccustomed to snow.

From Texas through the Deep South, down into Florida and to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, snow and sleet made for accumulating ice in New Orleans, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Florida and other major cities.

The snow storm could hit over a dozen states through Wednesday, including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.
