Trafford town hall bosses have now backed a ‘once in a generation opportunity’ for the £4.2bn redevelopment of Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium - and with it, the regeneration of western gateway of the city along banks of the Manchester Ship Canal.

Manchester United have received a major boost in plans for the redevelopment of Old Trafford with UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves throwing her support behind the project. Reeves says United’s ambition to create a community hub around the stadium is a “shining example of the bold pro-development model that will drive growth across the region” — in a sign the government is ready to help enable some form of financial backing.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe controversially suggested that Levelling-Up funds could go towards redeveloping Old Trafford and the surrounding area. The 71-year-old’s stake in United includes £273million for the redevelopment of the stadium, but that money would not come close to covering the kind of renovation he seeks.

At the end of the season, Manchester United will decide whether to build a new stadium with a capacity of 100,000, which they want to be “the Wembley of the North”, or renovate the current stadium to accommodate 87,000 people. It is likely to take six years and cost more than £2billion to construct a new stadium on the nearby site.
