About 500 of the National Guard troops deployed to the Los Angeles protests have been trained to accompany agents on immigration operations, the commander in charge said Wednesday.

A federal judge on Thursday granted California Gov. Gavin Newsom's request to block the Trump administration from federalizing the National Guard for deployment to Los Angeles amid protests over federal immigration raids. The administration filed a notice of appeal soon after the ruling.

"All of our soldiers are expected to keep up with evolving technology," said Captain Caleb Rogers, the head of the new unit.

Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman said 500 National Guard members have been trained to accompany agents on immigration operations.
