The rise of New York City’s mayor-elect comes at a complicated moment in the career of Senator Chuck Schumer, who is in danger of looking out of touch with the prevailing energy back home.

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday announced an all-female team of co-chairs for his transition team, including former Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan.

Within hours of Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York’s first Muslim mayor, there were swift and harsh reactions from his Jewish critics.

Hours after Mamdani’s win, President Donald Trump issued a series of calls to action on Truth Social. “Pass Voter Reform, Voter ID, No Mail-In Ballots. Save our Supreme Court from ‘Packing,’ No Two State addition, etc. TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER!!!” he wrote Tuesday night.

After Zohran Mamdani successfully completed his historic bid for mayor of the country's largest city on Tuesday night, he was joined onstage by his wife Rama Duwaji. In his speech, Mamdani thanked Duwaji, saying, "There is no one I would rather have by my side in this moment and in every moment."

Zohran Mamdani has just been elected mayor of New York City and is already challenging President Donald Trump.

National figures are competing in different ways to make Mamdani a Democratic symbol amid a consequential next chapter of his rise: running New York City.

Tuesday's result "shows that Islamophobia is not only morally bankrupt, but also an ineffective political strategy,” one group said.
