California is eyeing a ballot initiative this fall to redraw its House map for 2026 — only if Texas Republicans redistrict to gain more seats. New York Democrats may have to wait until 2028.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has vowed to “fight fire with fire” in response to moves in Texas to redraw the electoral map to favor Republicans.

Dozens of Texas Democrats fled their state and went to Chicago and New York on Sunday night in an effort to block a redistricting vote on Monday. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has since threatened to arrest and expel the lawmakers if they do not return by Monday afternoon.
