Tons of rock and soil roared across Colorado Highway 96 west of Pueblo Sunday afternoon as the hillside above the intersection with Colorado Highway 165 gave way.

Highway 96 near Westcliffe was closed due to a rock slide, with officials providing alternate routes for travel.

A geologist who has been working in the area of a rockslide that closed multiple highways in the McKenzie Junction area of Custer County said it is highly likely that additional rockslides could occur if slope mitigation is not performed in the area.
